Opposition leader and former Finance Minister Tendai Biti is out on bail after a weekend behind bars.
Arrested Saturday in Mutare during a rally against the controversial Constitutional Amendment Bill No. 3—which critics say could extend presidential terms and weaken voter power—Biti spent the weekend in custody.
On Monday, the Mutare Magistrates Court granted bail at $500 each for Biti and fellow activist Morgan Ncube. The state did not oppose bail but pushed for strict conditions: no public gatherings without police approval, surrender of passports, and twice-weekly check-ins.
Biti, a longtime ruling party critic, called the arrest political intimidation. His release comes as debate intensifies over whether dissent is being squeezed in Zimbabwe.
The legal fight may be over—for now—but the political battle continues.
