The Sports and Recreation Commission (SRC) has issued a press statement regarding the Zimbabwe Rugby Union (ZRU). The statement, dated September 17, 2025, advises the public and rugby stakeholders that the remaining members of the ZRU National Executive Board and the National Executive Committee have been suspended from all forms of rugby administration and activities. They are not permitted to hold office within the ZRU.
This action follows a resolution by the Board of Commissioners of the SRC on September 9, 2025. The suspension is in accordance with sections 30 (1) (b) and (c) and section 19 (a), (b), and (c), as well as paragraph 23 of the second schedule of the Sports and Recreation Commission Act (Chapter 25:15). The suspension will remain effective until the next Zimbabwe Rugby Union elections.
The SRC further states that the Zimbabwe Rugby Union is a registered National Association under section 29(4) of the Sports and Recreation Commission Act. As a registered National Association, the ZRU failed to conform to section 29(8)(b) of the same act. Consequently, the SRC issued a show cause order on September 4, 2025, which led to the resignation of eight members of the ZRU National Executive Board. The remaining members did not file any representations, prompting the SRC to invoke section 30 of the Sports and Recreation Commission Act.
The SRC will advise the nation on the future strategic direction of the Zimbabwe Rugby Union.
