4. Two maids, Loveness Chagonda and Bevelima Chiroodza, have been charged with stealing US$50,000 from their employer, former NSSA general manager Elizabeth Chitiga, while she was in and out of the hospital.
Chitiga had reportedly sold her two cars and put US$45,000 in a safe in one of her rooms. She discovered the theft in October 2022 when she found the cash was still intact but later realized the maids had access to the room and conspired to steal the money. She did not report the crime immediately due to health complications. She filed a police report in June of this year, leading to the arrest of the two maids. Police have since recovered a red suitcase, sheets, and other stolen items.

Walmart, which owns Massmart in South Africa, has announced that it will be opening its first branded stores in South Africa later this year. The company has stated that it will release more specific details about the store locations and opening dates in October.

2. An attorney in Johannesburg, Nonhle “NN” Nkomonde, has been disbarred after being accused of stealing from a deceased doctor’s bank account and using the money to buy eight houses. The Pretoria High Court struck her off the roll of legal practitioners after the Legal Practitioners Council (LPC) received 29 complaints, including accusations that she misused more than R2 million from a deceased person’s estate. The LPC has appointed a curator to take over Nkomonde’s trust accounts and business files, and the Legal Practitioners Fidelity Fund will work on recovering and repaying money to her clients. Nkomonde has two weeks to hand over her practice certificate to the high court.
