Baba Harare Exposes Exploitation in Gospel Music Industry

Popular musician Baba Harare has opened up about the financial and emotional struggles he faced while performing exclusively as a gospel artist, accusing churches and promoters of exploiting artists under the guise of ministry.

In a candid statement shared on social media, the “Guitar Sangoma” said that while gospel concerts are spiritually uplifting, they often leave artists struggling financially due to non-payment and lack of respect from organisers.

“Too many times I’ve been booked to minister at church events and conferences, only to struggle afterwards to recover even my basic expenses. Often, people hide under the idea that because you’re ministering for the Kingdom, payment shouldn’t matter. But I am not only a Christian, I am also a human being and an artist. This is my work, my livelihood, and I need to survive beyond the stage,” he wrote.

Baba Harare contrasted his gospel experience with the secular industry, where he says payment has never been an issue. He warned that unless artists are treated with dignity and fairness, the gospel industry will continue to stagnate.

Citing a recent example, the musician revealed he attended a church event where he requested only a US$200 token to cover fuel and expenses, but instead of receiving support, he was mocked and dismissed.

“This is not Kingdom behaviour. This is not how we build each other. Shame on those who exploit others in the name of Christ,” he added.

Baba Harare emphasized that his aim was not to attack individuals, but to ignite conversation on the sustainability of gospel music, urging organisers to honour agreements and respect gospel musicians as both ministers and professionals.
