Her advice comes amid concerns over limited opportunities and fierce competition in the legal job market.
In a series of tweets, Mahere emphasized the importance of professionalism, strategic planning, and personal branding for fresh graduates eager to establish their careers.
She urged graduates to avoid the “internship trap” by securing proper employment contracts once qualified, rather than relying solely on unpaid internships that may not lead to meaningful employment.
Mahere also stressed the importance of thorough research before applying to law firms. “Understand their focus, know the partners, and gather intelligence on what they value,” she advised. Tailoring application letters to each firm and addressing them personally to senior partners can significantly improve chances of success.
She recommended delivering application materials in person preferably by hand in a white envelope with the recipient’s name clearly typed and suggested requesting a brief courtesy visit to make a positive impression. Her advice extends to crafting a concise, well-formatted CV highlighting relevant skills and demonstrating a solid understanding of legal procedures.
Mahere further emphasized the importance of networking in appropriate settings such as Rotary clubs, Law Society events, or community gatherings, while cautioning graduates to avoid being overbearing. “People tend to hire those they like,” she noted, encouraging graduates to build genuine professional relationships.
