Popular Harare socialite Natalie ‘Enchantress’ Mhandu has reportedly been arrested in Budiriro on charges linked to alleged witchcraft practices, commonly referred to in Shona as “kubata bata mushonga.”
Mhandu was later released into the custody of her lawyer and is expected to appear in court tomorrow to face charges under Section 98 of the Criminal Law (Codification and Reform) Act [Chapter 9:23], which criminalizes practices commonly associated with witchcraft in Zimbabwe.
Sources close to the case say the matter came to light after Mhandu fired her maid, who allegedly went on to inform Mhandu’s former friends of a spiritual setup allegedly targeting them. The accusers claim Mhandu had written their names on cloth (jira), placed a knife on it, and buried the items under a muhacha tree a ritual believed by some to bring harm or misfortune.
It is further alleged that Mhandu’s former associates became fearful, believing the practice was intended to harm them, prompting a formal report to authorities.
The Law on Witchcraft Allegations
Under Section 98 of the Act, a person may be convicted if they:
Engage in any practice commonly associated with witchcraft;
Do so with intent to cause harm to another person;
Inspire a real fear or belief in the alleged victim that harm will occur.
If convicted, the accused may face a fine, up to five years in prison, or both.
Mhandu and her legal team have not yet released an official statement. Although she posted a video on her status showing she was chilled at home after rumors of her arrest circulated.
Her court appearance today is expected to draw significant public and media attention.
