Defence Minister Oppah Muchinguri-Kashiri has drawn criticism on social media after posting about a newly constructed 40-bed dormitory for girls, claiming it was a step toward empowering the girl child and addressing gender imbalances in student recruitment.

In her post, Muchinguri said“This new dormitory accommodates 40 girls and this will help to empower the girl child and also to address gender imbalances in recruiting new students. This is part of the military’s role in supporting development in the country besides ensuring peace and stability.”

However, the post was met with backlash from citizens who felt the statement was out of touch with the scale of the problem.

One user responded “40 girls Cde, please tipeiwo serious. Have you checked school dropout rates and percentage of affected girl child? Musazviitise Miswai.”
