Ghana is in deep mourning following the tragic helicopter crash that claimed the lives of eight people, including prominent political figures Dr. Ibrahim Murtala Mohammed and Dr. Omane Boamah, the country’s Minister of Defence.
The crash, which occurred yesterday, is being described as one of the most devastating aviation tragedies in recent memory.
Initial reports indicate the helicopter went down under unclear circumstances, prompting a full investigation by aviation and security authorities.
The news has sent shockwaves through Ghana’s political and civil society circles, as both Dr. Murtala and Dr. Boamah were respected public servants with decades of experience and dedication to national development.
Dr. Ibrahim Murtala Mohammed was not only a well-known political figure but also a regular voice on current affairs programmes like Alhaji and Alhaji and Good Morning Africa on Pan African TV. Known for his sharp intellect and fiery political commentary, his death leaves a significant void in Ghana’s public discourse.
Dr. Omane Boamah’s political career began during his days as President of the National Union of Ghana Students (NUGS). Originally aligned with the New Patriotic Party (NPP), he later joined the Committee for Joint Action (CJA) during the Kufour era, organizing nationwide protests against economic hardship.
His eventual move to the National Democratic Congress (NDC) led to a series of key government appointments under Presidents John Atta Mills and John Dramani Mahama, including Minister of Communications and, most recently, Minister of Defence.
Funeral arrangements for the deceased are expected to be announced in the coming days, as the nation prepares to honour the lives of two patriots who died in service to their country.
