The Zimbabwe Music Rights Association (ZIMURA) has stepped in to support ailing Sungura icon Nicholas Zakaria, popularly known as Madzibaba, by providing a vital incapacitation allowance to assist with his medical expenses.

Zakaria, a celebrated figure in Zimbabwe’s music industry and a longtime ZIMURA member since 1990, has recently faced health challenges that have prevented him from performing and earning a living. In response, ZIMURA dispatched a team to assess his condition and awarded him a one-off payment of US$500 (or its equivalent) to help ease the burden of his medical costs.

“This initiative underscores ZIMURA’s ongoing commitment to the welfare of its members, offering support that goes beyond copyright protection,” the organization said in a statement.

The incapacitation allowance is a key benefit offered by ZIMURA to members who are unable to work due to illness or other legitimate hardships. It forms part of a broader welfare program that includes funeral assistance, legal advice, gratuity payments for senior members, copyright education, and free digital music distribution.

ZIMURA’s Director of Information, Media and Publicity, Mr. Alexio Gwenzi, reaffirmed the association’s dedication to honoring its members throughout their careers — especially in times of need.

“ZIMURA continues to stand by its members, ensuring they receive the support they deserve,” Gwenzi said.

Zakaria, widely regarded as a pioneer of the Sungura genre and mentor to numerous musicians, has contributed immensely to Zimbabwe’s cultural heritage. The association’s support has been warmly received by fans and fellow artists, many of whom have called for broader assistance for veteran musicians facing health and financial challenges.
