Finance Minister Mthuli Ncube has explained the rationale behind the government’s decision to pay a US$50 allowance to members of the security forces including the army and police during March demonstrations led Blessed Geza.
The payments raised eyebrows across the civil service, with many questioning why teachers, nurses, and other civil servants were excluded from the payout.
In response, Minister Ncube clarified that the allowance is not a general civil service benefit, but a military-specific allowance designed for security operations.
The explanation comes amid growing concerns over disparities in compensation within the public sector, especially during times of civil unrest or national mobilisation.
However, Ncube argued that such allowances are standard practice in maintaining law and order, and are not meant to be permanent or universally applied.
