Primary and Secondary Education Minister Dr. Torerayi Moyo has revealed that the government is drafting a new policy proposal that would allow core subjects like mathematics and physics to be taught in vernacular languages, subject to Cabinet approval.
The initiative is intended to improve learners’ understanding and retention of complex concepts by delivering lessons in the languages they speak and comprehend most naturally.
Dr. Moyo made the remarks in the Senate last week while responding to a question from Chief Nechombo, who had inquired about government efforts to promote local languages in education.
If approved, the policy could mark a transformative step in Zimbabwe’s education system, potentially boosting academic performance and inclusion, particularly in rural and marginalized communities.
