Bellarmine Chatunga Mugabe, the youngest son of the late former president Robert Mugabe, appears to be brushing off mounting legal and public scrutiny following allegations of assault with a mocking Facebook post that has sparked outrage.

Chatunga posted “Haiwahwoooo musataure kwamusina kuswera, speed itai shoma. Ndovaremera anambambaira.”

This comes after he was charged with multiple counts of assault and released on US$200 bail. Prosecutors allege he attacked the driver for not showing what he deemed proper respect.

The dismissive tone of the post, paired with emojis and laughter, has drawn sharp criticism from human rights advocates and members of the public who see it as evidence of arrogance and impunity.

The image accompanying the post  a throwback photo of Chatunga at a funeral with his mother Grace Mugabe  only added to the controversy.

As legal proceedings continue, Chatunga’s defiance on social media may further complicate public perception of the case  and highlight the long-standing concerns about elite privilege in Zimbabwe.
