
President Emmerson Mnangagwa has paid tribute to Dr Joshua Mqabuko Nyongolo Nkomo, affectionately known as Father Zimbabwe, marking the 26th anniversary of his death with a message of unity, resilience, and national development.
In a statement shared on his official platform, President Mnangagwa described the late nationalist leader as a “towering legacy” in Zimbabwe’s liberation struggle, commending his commitment to peace, unity, and Pan-Africanism.
“Dr Nkomo devoted his life to the liberation of our people and the advancement of peace, unity, and Pan-Africanism,” wrote the President.
He noted that Dr Nkomo’s values continue to resonate today seen in young farmers enhancing agricultural productivity and innovators shaping Zimbabwe’s future.
The President urged Zimbabweans to honour Nkomo’s memory through national unity and inclusive socio-economic development.
“Let us honour his memory by upholding peace, building our nation with unity of purpose, and striving for socio-economic development that leaves no one behind,” he added.
Dr Nkomo died on 1 July 1999 at the age of 82, leaving behind a legacy as a founding father of Zimbabwe’s independence and a unifying figure during some of the country’s most difficult chapters.
“May his soul continue to rest in eternal peace,” concluded Mnangagwa.
