Former President Dr. Mokgweetsi Masisi has finally vacated State House, nearly eight months after leaving office, allowing his successor, President Duma Gideon Boko, to move into the official residence this month.
Masisi’s delayed departure from the presidential residence forced President Boko to operate from the Government Guest House since assuming power in October last year. Government officials were reportedly caught off guard by the political transition and had to urgently seek accommodation for the former leader, as required by law for former heads of state.
The Permanent Secretary to the President, Emma Peloetletse, confirmed the development, noting that only minor touch-ups were being made at State House.
“Yes, he (Boko) will be occupying the State House. There are some minor renovations, probably just painting and stuff nothing huge as we know we have financial problems.”
To minimize expenses, Boko is expected to inherit much of the furniture left behind by Masisi, as part of government efforts to practice financial prudence.
Interestingly, sources had earlier indicated that Boko was in no rush to move in, reportedly finding the guest house more functional, private, and better maintained for both official and personal use.
Masisi’s new residence, reportedly acquired by the state for P17 million, is located in the tranquil Mokolodi area, roughly 10 kilometres south of Gaborone. The luxury estate features a gourmet kitchen, scullery, pantry, landscaped gardens, and is surrounded by indigenous flora and wildlife.
