DEATH OF NEWSPAPERS?
Alpha Media Holdings, publishers of NewsDay, Standard and the Zimbabwe Independent – was once a well-run media company which produced some of the best journalists in Zimbabwe.
But now the company is on the brink of collapse with the morale of staffers at an all time low and newspaper sales are nothing to write home about: NewDay sells 1,200 copies per day, on average, while the Zimbabwe Independent sits at about 1,300 per week.
NewsDay only sends about 100 copies to Bulawayo while Zim Independent posts 60 newspapers, which sell at $2 each.
AMH, owned by media entreprenuer Trevor Ncube, has been struggling to pay workers, for years.
Things are now so bad that reporters are working two weeks per month, and their already pathetic salaries were cut.
Some workers were not paid their ZiG component for March as the company claimed the poorly paid journalists owed the firm, instead. Workers are owed seven months’ salary.
“I wasn’t paid in March. I was told i owe the company ZiG2,” said a dejected staffer, chocking with emotions.
Journalists are seething in anger over the abrupt cut of medical aid, allowances, etc. It’s just chaotic with a new overzealous human capital excutive, whom journalists say he knows nothing about media business.
The trigger happy manager has been dragging journalists to disciplinary hearings over “the silliest of mistakes”. It’s astonishing!
This seems to be the beginning of the end of AMH. Quite a sad reality!
The development also shows serious challenges facing the media industry due to a number of reasons.
WHATS HAPPENING INSIDE AMH
According to sources, the collapse of the once mighty media empire can also be linked to a combination of the “worst managers” in the company’s history – Kenias Mafukidze (CEO), Punish Murimbi (marketing executive), Takelah Gondokondo (Finance Director).
“Its a well known secret that Gondokondo is a full-blown package of what not to do in finance in terms of being clueless hance Mafukidze runs rings around her,” a source said.
“Gondokondo has been hiring a Toyota vehicle for a lot of money per week when the company fails to pay for its website and electricity bills,” said the source.
“As for Punish, we are told that some clients have said they cant understand why he still remains as the marketing manager. The guy is too old school that he feels this is 1990…clients cant understand him.
“As for Kenias, his track record in collapsing companies is well-known. The man has failed to run even his own company.”
The company has also been deducting money from its workers and failing to remit medical aid socities to an extent that some medical aid socities now demand cash upfront.
