*Student Leader Darlington Matola Faces Security Threats After Challenging University’s Currency Policy: A Call to Action for a Safe Campus Environment*

The Zimbabwe Independent Movement is deeply concerned about the security and well-being of our member, Darlington Matola, a student leader at Great Zimbabwe University. In a disturbing letter addressed to the Security Director on campus, Matola has revealed that he is facing security threats that have left him fearing for his safety.

This development comes after Matola successfully challenged the university’s decision to only accept US dollars as payment, instead of the local Zimbabwean currency. In 2024, Matola worked with Matutu and Mureri Legal Practitioners to take the university administration to court, arguing that the policy was unfair to students. The court ruled in favor of the students, allowing them to pay fees in local currency.

Despite not holding any official position in the student leadership, Matola has continued to be a vocal advocate for students’ rights, demonstrating his unwavering commitment to fighting for the interests of his fellow students.

However, since his victory in court, Matola has been facing intimidation and security threats. According to Matola, he has been receiving suspicious knocks on his door and is being monitored and intimidated by unnamed individuals. These alarming incidents have created a hostile and intimidating environment for Matola, hindering his ability to continue advocating for students’ rights.

Furthermore, we have been made aware of a hearing scheduled for the 24th of this month, which we believe is a deliberate attempt to stifle Matola’s dissenting voice. We urge the university administration to desist from any attempts to silence or intimidate student leaders and instead focus on creating a safe and secure environment for all students.

We as a movement do not expect the expulsion of Matola, and we will be monitoring the situation closely to ensure that his rights are protected.

The Zimbabwe Independent Movement condemns these security threats in the strongest terms and demands that the university administration takes immediate action to ensure Matola’s safety and security. We call upon the university authorities to:

1. Conduct a thorough investigation into these security threats and take necessary measures to identify and bring to justice those responsible.
2. Provide adequate security measures to protect Matola and ensure his safety on campus.
3. Create a safe and secure environment for all students, free from intimidation and harassment.

We urge the university administration to take these demands seriously and to prioritize the safety and security of all students.

We call upon all students, staff, and members of the university community to stand in solidarity with Matola and demand a safe and secure campus environment for all.
