Minister of Information, publicity and broadcasting Dr Jenfan Muswere announced plans to regulate social media.

Dr Muswere said the law will regulate social media as it has become a challenge not only in Zimbabwe but across Africa.

He stated that social media is not governed which has led to its misuse through creation of ghost accounts.

He said the new legislation was to ensure that these platforms are governed and who ever misuse them is held accountable.

This has sparked a debate among Zimbabweans with some welcoming the move as a way to promote safety and  responsibility , while others see it as an attack of freedom of speech.

Although he had stated that it is not meant to infringe on fundamental rights this has however been received with mixed emotions.
