The National Youth Taskforce of Zimbabwe has officially rejected the 2030 Agenda, a global initiative aimed at promoting sustainable development.

The statement, shared on social media by prominent youth leader Bruce Moyo, underscores the frustrations of young Zimbabweans regarding their government’s handling of crucial issues such as human rights, education, and economic stability.

The 2030 Agenda, adopted by all United Nations member states, is designed to address a range of global challenges, including poverty, inequality, and environmental sustainability. However, the youth taskforce argues that the agenda has been undermined in Zimbabwe by systemic corruption and ineffective governance.

The  statement emphasizes the diverse perspectives of Zimbabwe’s youth, highlighting their concerns over the lack of meaningful action from government officials. “We want to categorically state that there is no endorsement for the 2030 Agenda in its current form,” he stated. The taskforce believes that the government has failed to meet the needs of its citizens, particularly the youth, who make up a significant portion of the population.

This rejection comes against a backdrop of ongoing economic challenges and political unrest in Zimbabwe. The youth have voiced their desire for a more participatory approach to governance that includes their voices in decision-making processes. They are calling for a re-evaluation of the country’s priorities to align more closely with the aspirations of its young people.

The National Youth Taskforce urges fellow progressive organizations to join them in their call for change. They advocate for an agenda that genuinely reflects the needs and aspirations of Zimbabwe’s youth, emphasizing the importance of transparency, accountability, and a focus on human rights.

As Zimbabwe navigates its complex socio-political landscape, the voices of its youth are becoming increasingly crucial in shaping the nation’s future. The rejection of the 2030 Agenda marks a significant moment in the ongoing dialogue about youth empowerment and governance in Zimbabwe.
