Information Communications Technology, Postal, and Courier Services Minister Tatenda Mavetera has distanced herself from a statement claimingWhatsApp group administrators would need to secure licenses.

On a statement posted on her LinkedIn, Mavetera had initially said the licence fees range from US$50 to US$2500.

Taking to X, Tatenda said the claims were false and not applicable to platforms or administrators that do not collect or process PII for commercial or business purposes.

“I would like to distance myself from the malicious fake news about the government’s intentions to license or penalize WhatsApp groups or administrators of any social media platform with fines of up to USD 2,500,” Mavetera wrote.
