5. Arcadium Deal
Rio Tinto is in talks with lithium miner Arcadium, a deal that will make Rio Tinto the third biggest producer of EV battery metal. Arcadium shares surged 36% on Friday. The two top producers of lithium are Arbemale and SQM.
In 2021, Zhejiang Huayou Cobalt acquired a 100% stake in the Arcadia lithium mine project in Zimbabwe from Prospect Resources for $378 million cash. This acquisition solidified Huayou Cobalt’s position in the global lithium market and provided the company with a significant source of lithium, a key component in lithium-ion batteries.
