A report by the European union in Zambia has revealed that acollapse of the Kariba Dam wall would impact millions of people and put up to 500 000 lives in Mozambique at risk. This warning prompted swift action to prevent a disaster by the EU, World Bank and the Swedish government.

According to Claudio Bacigalupi, EU Head of Corporation, “If the dam had collapsed, a massive amount of water would have arrived in Mozambique, as estimated by the World Bank, causing approximately half a million deaths and displacing three million people.”

The Kariba Dam Rehabilitation Project was initiated to reinforce the dam and prevent a catastrophe. The project aims to ensure energy security, protect lives, and prevent environmental damage. With a sense of urgency, the project is scheduled for completion by December 2024. Meeting this deadline will not only prevent a potential tragedy but also secure a safer, more sustainable future for generations to come.
