
There is panic among hundreds of thousands of foreign students after South Africa moved to scrap a law that allowed them to automatically get residency on graduation.
Business Day newspaper reports that the Home affairs department said the waiver was in breach of the immigration act because it was creating a loophole foreigners were being granted residency before even graduating with a critical skill.
The newspaper said Home Affairs Minister, Aaron Motsoaledi had not been aware of the waiver until he heard about it on a radio show.
The waiver allowed foreigners who studied and obtained qualifications in critical professions to stay in South Africa permanently without having a job or five years experience, which is normally required when one is applying for a permit.
