South Africa’s President Cyril Ramaphosa has appointed Sydney Mufamadi and Baleka Mbete as special envoys to Zimbabwe, in an attempt to intervene in an unfolding humanitarian crisis.

Ramaphosa who is the Africa Union chairperson has bowed to mounting pressure to intervene in the crisis in Zimbabwe.

The pair is expected to engage the government of Zimbabwe and relevant stakeholders to identify possible ways in which South Africa can assist Zimbabwe as a country.

Mufamadi was sent to Harare by former SA President Thabo Mbeki to engage with the late Robert Mugabe and Tsvangirai, however it did not yield anything.

Ramaphosa’s special envoys is expected to leave for Zimbabwe as soon as all the arrangements are made.
