Yesterday it was announced that South Africa has invoked emergency procurement procedures to build a 40km fence between the Zimbabwe Beitbridge border.
The fence will be on both sides of the Limpopo River between near Beitbridge border and is meant to prevent illegal crossing from Zimbabwe into South Africa.
As coronavirus infections continue to climb, the South African government will be forced to more take drastic steps on various issues.
The next phase in South Africa will likely be a National lockdown. This will be a total game changer.
The SA government will be forced to take such actions as clearing out many Zimbabweans who stand around at street corners and deporting illegal immigrants.
There are a number of pressing issues that have been highlighted by Coronavirus, including :
Illegal Immigration – The ANC has been allowing Zimbabweans to cross into South Africa to work in low income jobs such as farms, domestic work and construction.
Food Shortages – Panic Buying already started this past week.
Healthcare – What will happen when hospital space starts running out in SA? It is estimated that 70% of South Africans will get Coronavirus.
Unemployment – Coronavirus will result in a recession in South Africa. Will SSA still be able to give work permits to Zimbabweans?
Social Unrest – Will local people allow Zimbabweans to access medical care in public hospitals?
– Will there be a rise of Xenophobia once again in South Africa?
– Will local people allow Zimbabweans to continue standing at street corners when there is a lockdown?
Conclusion
The official reason given for erecting the massive fence on the border with Zimbabwe is that this will prevent the spread of Coronavirus through illegal crossing points.
However, the truth is that this is the beginning of the ANC government changing its policy towards Zimbabwe. The ANC government can no longer afford to let problems in Zimbabwe continue to affect South African Citizens.
Very soon, the South African government will be forced to speak out against ZANU-PF.
For ordinary Zimbabweans, South Africa will soon stop being an easy option especially if coronavirus infections continue to rise.
