Deaths & Displacement: 42 people have been killed in targeted violence leading up to protests on June 30. Over 100,000 African foreign nationals have fled the country.

The Violence: Protests (planned by KZN groups) turned chaotic. Immigrant-owned shops, homes, and shacks were looted and ransacked in areas like Johannesburg, Soweto, Germiston, and Pietermaritzburg. Some local businesses were also hit. Splinter groups threw rocks at buildings.

Response: The army (SANDF) was deployed to Hillbrow. Police made arrests for looting and attempted murder. The Justice Minister warned that criminals would be prosecuted.

Repatriations: Thousands are fleeing through the Beitbridge border. On one day, over 3,000 people were processed. Around 7,000–8,000 people sheltered overnight in Musina waiting for documents. Thousands more were bused in from Durban.
