Ryan Tivafukidze, a Form Three pupil at Matopo High School, died on 3 July 2026. He was reportedly found collapsed and carried back to his hostel.

Cause of Death: A post-mortem report revealed the cause of death was internal bleeding in the brain, with minor bleeding also found around the heart.

The school headmaster, Gardson Sibanda, told the family that Ryan was given ibuprofen after complaining of feeling unwell.

However, the family found a notice at the school stating that no medication was available because the school had run out.

The post-mortem, however, showed that Ryan’s stomach was empty except for water.

School’s Statement: In a communication to parents, the school confirmed Ryan’s death, stating he fell ill and was rushed to Matopo Clinic, where he was pronounced dead. Initial reports indicated he had complained of a headache.

Headmaster’s Response: When contacted by the press, Headmaster Gardson Sibanda cited being in a meeting and did not respond. Subsequent attempts to reach him were unsuccessful.
