Ghana Evacuates Citizens from South Africa
Ghana has started bringing its citizens home from South Africa.
The first government-chartered flight left Johannesburg’s O.R. Tambo International Airport on Wednesday, 27 May 2026. It carried nearly 300 Ghanaian nationals and landed in Accra.
Why the evacuation is happening
The Ghanaian government launched this voluntary program because of rising anti-immigration protests and safety fears in several South African cities.
How many people are affected
About 800 Ghanaians registered for evacuation. The first flight brought back 297 people. More flights are planned, with the next one on Sunday.
What support is the government giving?
The Ghana Ministry of Foreign Affairs is covering all travel document and transport costs. Returning citizens will receive emergency supplies, financial help, and mental health support.
How did Ghanaians come to South Africa?
Most arrived on commercial flights with valid visitor or tourist visas, but many overstayed. A smaller number came by road through Zimbabwe or Mozambique.
Legal status of those evacuated
According to South Africa’s Border Management Authority, about 90% of the evacuees were undocumented. They often came on temporary visas but could not get work or residency permits.
How many Ghanaians live in South Africa?
Estimates range from 16,000 to 25,000. Ghana’s High Commissioner, Benjamin Anani Quashie, says the official registered number is closer to 16,000.
