WATCH LIVE: Chamisa And Hopewell Met With Auxillia

There has been a lot of noise in Zimbabwean political commentary recently. Activist and commentator Jealousy Mawarire has made a series of explosive claims linking opposition leader Nelson Chamisa, journalist Hopewell Chin’ono, and the First Lady, Auxilia Mnangagwa.

Here is a simple breakdown of the allegations, who is involved, and the context surrounding these claims.

The Main Allegation: Introducing Hopewell to the First Lady

Jealousy Mawarire has publicly stated that Nelson Chamisa personally introduced Hopewell Chin’ono to Auxilia Mnangagwa. Mawarire describes this introduction as the starting point of a relationship that allegedly allowed Chin’ono to become close to the First Lady’s circle.

According to Mawarire, this was not a casual introduction. He alleges that Chamisa organized a specific meeting for Chin’ono to meet Benson Muneri, who he claims is a discreet aide or envoy for Auxilia Mnangagwa.

Mawarire claims that Chamisa requested Hopewell to host this meeting at his house in Chisipite, Harare. He alleges that at this meeting, Chamisa asked Hopewell to go and meet Auxilia Mnangagwa on his (Chamisa’s) behalf to broker a political deal.

Who is Benson Muneri?

Benson Muneri is a well-known Zimbabwean entrepreneur and the CEO of Hotplate Grillhouse, a popular fast-food chain in Zimbabwe and the SADC region. In Mawarire’s narrative, Muneri acts as the intermediary for the First Lady.

The “Deal” and Financial Claims

Mawarire alleges that this meeting was about a political deal, though he has stated he will not delve into all the details. He claims the result of this arrangement is that Chamisa is now “very liquid.”

Mawarire has also made broader claims about Chamisa’s finances, separate from the Hopewell introduction. He alleges that two months ago (around December 2026), Chamisa drove to a farm in Mashonaland West with $1 million in cash in his car intending to pay for the farm. Mawarire claims the owner was scared to handle such a large amount of cash and instructed Chamisa to deposit the money with a lawyer in Harare instead.

The Link to Journalist Hopewell Chin’ono

These allegations attempt to explain a shift in Hopewell Chin’ono’s commentary.

Hopewell Chin’ono is a well-known anti-corruption journalist who has historically been critical of ZANU-PF and has faced arrest for his work. However, he has also been sharply critical of Nelson Chamisa and the opposition’s strategy.

Mawarire’s claim suggests that Chin’ono’s criticisms of Chamisa are not based on policy differences but are influenced by the relationship that Chamisa himself allegedly facilitated with the First Lady’s circle. He suggests that Chin’ono later received favors, payments, or protection from Auxilia Mnangagwa’s side as a result.

The Larger Context: The Chamisa-Mnangagwa “Pact”

These specific allegations about the First Lady and Hopewell fit into a larger pattern of claims Mawarire has been making since before the 2023 elections.

Mawarire has repeatedly accused Nelson Chamisa of having a secret pact with President Emmerson Mnangagwa. Here are the key points of that broader accusation:

  • The Pre-Election Agreement: Mawarire claims Chamisa entered a pre-arranged secret pact with Mnangagwa before the 2023 elections, allegedly mediated by a First Lady aide.

  • “Looking After” Each Other: He alleges the agreement was that whoever won the election would “look after” the loser using state resources.

  • The $20 Million Claim: Mawarire has repeatedly claimed Chamisa received $20 million from Mnangagwa (facilitated through state channels) as part of this pact.

  • Suspicious Timing in 2026: Mawarire questioned the timing of Chamisa’s return to active politics in January 2026. He noted it came days after Senator Jameson Timba launched a platform to oppose ZANU-PF’s plan to extend Mnangagwa’s rule to 2030.

    • Chamisa declared there is “no constitution to defend” in Zimbabwe and that demonstrations are useless.

    • Mawarire argued that by saying this, Chamisa was “stalling efforts to fight the 2030 agenda” and “tacitly endorsing ED’s 2030 agenda.”
