Zimbabwe National Army director of education Colonel Jonathan Willie Enias Hungwe who died last Thursday will be buried in Chivi today. He was 58. Rtd Brig General Hungwe, whose Chimurenga name was ‘Zvichanaka Chete’, died at a private hospital in Harare after a short illness. A funeral parade in his honour was held last Friday at One Commando Barracks. Cde Josiah Hungwe who was uncle to Col Hungwe described him as a family unifier. Born on December 31, 1956 in Chivi District, Masvingo, the late senior officer did his Sub A to Standard 3 in Mberengwa before attending Lower Gweru Mission in 1968 for Standard 4 and 5. He proceeded to Wanezi Mission for secondary education before joining the liberation struggle as a ZANLA cadre in 1977. He received military training in Mozambique and operated in the Gaza Province until ceasefire. Col Hungwe was awarded several medals and took part in the Mozambique and DRC campaigns. He is survived by wife, Violet and five children.

  1. Gang has police links: Daniel Munyanyi (50) was arrestedby members of the public at Nyika Growth point while hiding. On Sunday, 1 March 2026, two detectives from the Zimbabwe Republic Police (ZRP) Harare CID Homicide Division were fatally shot by a suspected armed robber in Zaka, Masvingo Province.  The deceased have been identified as Bernard Chindeke (38) and McKenzie Chitowe (42). The shooting occurred in Ndume Village, Chimedza area, under Chief Ndanga. The detectives had tracked two armed robbery suspects to the village. They successfully apprehended one suspect in the early hours of Sunday morning. However, the second suspect opened fire on the officers during the operation. Detective Chindeke died instantly at the scene. Detective Chitowe was rushed to Ndanga Referral Hospital and later transferred toward Masvingo Provincial Hospital, but he succumbed to his injuries en route. Police have launched an intensive manhunt for the remaining suspect, identified as Daniel Munyanyi (50) of Ndume Village. Waterfalls Armed Robbery (Feb 27): At approximately 2:00 AM, the gang targeted a residence in Retreat, Waterfalls. They wore police uniforms and balaclavas, arming themselves with a pistol and iron bars.They forced entry, held a woman at gunpoint, and stole US$15 (with a total loss of US$30 reported). During the robbery, they claimed to have already shot the victim’s father in a separate incident. Polokwane Bar Robbery (February 28, 2026): The gang targeted Polokwane Bar in Vantage, Spitzkop. Modus Operandi: Armed with a pistol, knife, and taser while wearing balaclavas. Outcome: They stole US$700 from the premises. When patrons attempted to intervene, the gang shot one man in the buttock and stabbed three others. Daniel Munyanyi (30): Arrested in the Nyika Area of Bikita by members of the public while in hiding. The firearm used in the murders was recovered. Accomplices: Aphel Muzanenhamo Chiro (34), Nashe Gasva (18), Hughsters Chiro (24), and Spencer Madimutsa appeared in a Harare court.
