The South Africa DPP is refusing to release two Zimbabwean babies who were jailed at Limpopo after their mothers attempted to leave South Africa wthout passports. The mothers are among 8 Zimbabweans who were jailed for 1 year. After they completed their sentences, they were then charged with corruption and are now undergoing a new trial which will commence in April 2026.
On 22 April 2025, a group consisting of four women, one man, and two babies was arrested at the South African border while attempting to cross into Zimbabwe. They were detained alongside two conductors and two officers.
Two days later, on 24 April 2025, the group appeared in court charged with border jumping (immigration violations). They were sentenced to 90 days in prison or a fine of R4,000.

However, ten days into serving their immigration sentence, investigating officers brought an additional charge of corruption against the group. This new charge was linked to the two conductors and two officers who had been arrested alongside them. The group maintains that they have no knowledge of how the corruption took place, as the conductors were solely responsible for all movements and logistics at the border.
The group served their full three-month prison sentence for border jumping while simultaneously attending court proceedings for the corruption case. Although they have finished their initial sentence, they have not been released and are currently being held at the Messina holding cells.
To date, they have attended 11 court sessions. The proceedings were initially held at the Messina Magistrate Court until 1 September 2025. On 16 September 2025, the case was transferred to the Giyani Regional Court in Limpopo.
Represented by their lawyer, Mr. Mudau, the group remains in custody with their next court appearance scheduled for 1 April 2026.
