Zimbabwe MPS are likely to receive $150 000 loans as part of their conditions of service.
Speaking during a pre-budget seminar, Opposition CCC MP, Charlton Hwende told Finance Minister, Mthuli Ncube that MPs need the loans to complete their houses after they received residential stands but no houses.
Hwende, the MP for Kuwadzana East (from the Citizens Coalition for Change party), was speaking at a pre-budget seminar in Bulawayo during a parliamentary plenary session.Â
- Housing loans: He argues that MPs were previously given US$40,000 loans in the last parliament to build on residential stands allocated by the government, but due to inflation and in comparison to perks given to executive members, they now need at least US$150,000 per MP as a loan to properly construct houses. He urges the finance ministry to budget for this minimum amount.
- Salary increases: He criticizes Finance Minister Mthuli Ncube for not raising MPs’ salaries and calls for adjustments to better reflect current economic realities.
