A horrifying incident shattered the peace of a quiet village in Matobo on 30 October 2025, turning a home into a tragic scene of violence and loss. This event has sent shockwaves through the community, exposing deep-seated family tensions that exploded into unimaginable horror.

The People and the Tragedy

The fire tragically claimed the lives of two family members: Melissa Ndlovu (23), who died at the hospital upon arrival, and her husband, Delight Nyathi, who succumbed to his injuries the following day. Their one-year-old child was also critically affected, left fighting for life in intensive care.

The alleged perpetrator is Florence Ndlovu, identified as Melissa’s brother. Reports suggest the attack stemmed from long-brewing family conflict, possibly related to issues like a bride price or personal relationships, culminating in this devastating act.

The Aftermath and the Search

The community is left reeling from the brutality of the attack, with neighbours describing the scene as horrific as they watched the wooden and iron-sheet shack engulfed in flames. A relative of the victims shared their unbearable pain, stating, “My younger brother died in my arms,” emphasizing the emotional toll this has taken.

The community’s shock has been compounded by the fact that the alleged attacker remains at large.

Police Confirm Investigation

The case is officially being handled by authorities. Inspector Chiratidzo Dube of Matabeleland South confirmed the incident and issued a critical statement:

The police are actively searching for Florence Ndlovu.

Inspector Dube also used this devastating event to send a public message, urging residents to remain calm and resolve disputes peacefully, warning strongly against resorting to violence or taking the law into their own hands.

The community now grapples with the immense loss while hoping for the swift apprehension of the suspect and the recovery of the critically injured baby.
