Prominent journalist Hopewell Chin’ono has raised alarm over the state of Zimbabwe’s public health sector after sharing images of a meal served to patients at United Bulawayo Hospitals (UBH).

The dinner, which appeared to be little more than plain starch with no meaningful nutritional value, sparked outrage online. Chin’ono described it as “a slow cruelty against the sick” and said such conditions betray the very essence of healthcare.

He blamed the dire situation on corruption, looting, and incompetence, accusing the government of failing to provide even the most basic care.

“This is the price the nation pays for a corrupt system. What is worse is that some still defend it, entrenching suffering while hope for a functional state is destroyed,” he said.

Chin’ono’s remarks have reignited debate over the collapse of Zimbabwe’s public institutions, with hospitals increasingly seen as a reflection of the country’s governance failures.
