Opposition politician Gift Ostallos Siziba has dismissed the launch of the new passenger train service between Harare and Mutare, which charges US$60 per ticket, as a mockery of ordinary Zimbabweans.

Taking to X (formerly Twitter), Siziba blasted the move, describing it as yet another example of misplaced priorities by the ruling party, ZANU-PF.

He wrote “When a clown moves into a palace, he doesn’t become king. The palace becomes a circus.”

His remarks came shortly after the government’s fanfare around the train launch, which was presented as a milestone in reviving the country’s struggling railway sector. However, the steep ticket price has sparked outrage, with many arguing that it is unaffordable for the average commuter.
