Citizens of Botswana 🇧🇼 and Zambia 🇿🇲 will soon be able to travel between the two countries using only their national ID cards, scrapping the need for passports, according to reports from Botswana’s media.

This move follows the precedent set in 2023, when Botswana and Namibia 🇳🇦 became the first Southern African countries to implement ID-based border crossings, a policy hailed as a major step toward regional integration and free movement.

Talks are reportedly ongoing between Botswana and Zimbabwe 🇿🇼 to establish a similar ID-based travel arrangement, though technical systems and border security protocols are still being aligned.

If successful, these agreements could mark a significant milestone in SADC’s broader vision of regional mobility, potentially boosting trade, tourism, and cultural exchange among member states.
