At least 16 passengers were rushed to Chitungwiza Central Hospital after an overloaded 18-seater commuter omnibus veered off the road and collided with a Toyota Cross Fire along Seke Road near Chinhamo Service Station on Tuesday morning.

Eyewitnesses say the accident was caused by a tyre burst that led the driver to lose control of the vehicle. Most of the injured were standing passengers who bore the brunt of the impact. Thankfully, no fatalities were recorded.

The crash adds to a growing number of daily road traffic incidents along Seke Road, which has fast become an accident hotspot now averaging nearly one crash per day.

Local traditional leaders and church groups have even performed cleansing rituals in a bid to curb what some are calling a “spiritual curse” affecting the busy highway.

Emergency responders from Discovery were praised for their quick and professional reaction. The group deployed several vehicles to transport injured passengers to hospital, earning widespread gratitude from the community.

“These vehicles were all over the place, carrying injured people swiftly and efficiently. Their conduct saved lives,” one bystander said.

Authorities have urged public transport operators to avoid overloading and ensure their vehicles are roadworthy, while road safety advocates continue calling for urgent action to improve safety infrastructure on Seke Road.
