Nigerian Afropop sensation Ayra Starr has officially signed a career-defining deal with Jay-Z’s Roc Nation, marking a major leap in her international music journey.

But as congratulations pour in, so too have viral rumors  including claims that her new contract forbids her from having a boyfriend or getting pregnant for the next five years.

The 21-year-old star, known for her chart-topping hits like Rush and her recent album The Year I Turned 21, now joins a roster of global heavyweights under Roc Nation’s management.

The deal is widely seen as a strategic move to expand her reach in the U.S. and global markets  and is reportedly focused on management, touring, and brand partnerships, rather than a full record label signing.

Still a Mavin Artist — With a Twist

Contrary to some speculation, Ayra Starr is still signed to Mavin Records, now operating under the Universal Music Group (UMG) umbrella. In 2024, UMG acquired a majority stake in Mavin Global, with Don Jazzy reportedly retaining a 20% ownership share. While Mavin handles her core recording rights, Roc Nation will likely oversee her international strategy and U.S. market rollout.

The Contract Ban Over Love And Motherhood:

The biggest online buzz, however, has come from unconfirmed reports that Ayra Starr’s Roc Nation contract contains strict personal conduct clauses  allegedly barring her from dating or getting pregnant for five years.

A viral Facebook post claimed, “Don Jazzy now owns only 20% of Ayra Starr, and her Roc Nation contract says she can’t have a boyfriend or get pregnant for five years.”

Ayra vs. Tyla: Who’s Winning the Global Spotlight?

The Roc Nation deal has also reignited comparisons between Ayra Starr and South African pop star Tyla, whose Grammy win for Water catapulted her into global stardom.

Tyla is signed to Epic Records (Sony) and has received critical acclaim, awards, and massive streaming numbers.

Ayra Starr continues to build a more extensive discography and recently featured on Barack Obama’s 2024 Summer Playlist, further solidifying her global appeal.

While Tyla may have the awards edge, many argue that Ayra Starr’s Roc Nation partnership signals an even more ambitious global push, positioning her as one of Africa’s most commercially viable exports.

Ayra Starr is officially signed to Roc Nation, while still under Mavin/UMG for recording.

Viral rumors about restrictions on pregnancy and dating remain unconfirmed, but have sparked debate on artist control and gender bias in the music industry.

Her Roc Nation deal could cement her status as one of Afrobeats’ most influential global voices, rivaling or even surpassing peers like Tyla.
