Venancio Mondlane, leader of Mozambique’s main opposition party, is facing five criminal charges including allegations of inciting terrorism, promoting criminal acts, and encouraging collective disobedience.

Speaking to journalists outside the attorney general’s office in Maputo, Mondlane said the charges had been made official after months of legal limbo. He claims the charges are politically motivated.

Mondlane has been a prominent figure in the anti-government protests that erupted after the October 2023 general elections, which were marred by widespread allegations of electoral fraud. The demonstrations were violently suppressed by security forces.

Although Mondlane and President Daniel Chapo reportedly reached an agreement in March to reduce tensions, Mondlane says he is still being targeted and persecuted.
