Emmerson Mnangagwa has declared the fatal road accident that claimed 17 lives along the Harare–Chitungwiza Road a national disaster, allowing for full state assistance with funeral arrangements and other support for the affected families.

The declaration was announced by Local Government Minister Daniel Garwe, who addressed mourning families at a funeral parlour in Chitungwiza on Tuesday. He confirmed that the government will shoulder all funeral costs and logistical needs for the victims.

“This tragic accident has shaken the nation. His Excellency, President Mnangagwa, has declared it a national disaster to ensure that all necessary support is rendered swiftly,” said Minister Garwe.

The accident, which occurred at Hunyani Bridge, involved a haulage truck that overturned and crushed a commuter omnibus. Seventeen people, including two pedestrians, lost their lives. Only two passengers survived the crash.

In response to the crisis, the Municipality of Chitungwiza also announced emergency water supply to the suburbs of St. Mary’s and Manyame on July 23 and 24, specifically to assist with funeral preparations.

The national disaster designation enables the government to mobilize resources across agencies and departments in support of the bereaved.
