Nearly six years after the passing of legendary Zimbabwean musician Oliver “Tuku” Mtukudzi, the deep divisions within his family continue to cast a shadow over efforts to honour his legacy.
What was meant to be a moment of unity at last year’s inaugural Oliver Mtukudzi International Festival of the Arts (OMIFA) turned into public drama when Tuku’s daughter, Selmor Mtukudzi, broke down in tears and stormed off stage mid-performance. The incident sparked a national debate, drawing battle lines between supporters of Selmor and those of Tuku’s widow, Daisy Mtukudzi.
Now, nearly a year later, the wounds remain unhealed. Both camps have announced separate events to commemorate Tuku in September an unfortunate sign that reconciliation remains elusive.
OMIFA 2025, led by Daisy, will be held on September 20 at Pakare Paye Arts Centre in Norton, as originally envisioned when the festival launched.
In an interview, Daisy expressed her determination to press on,“We are proceeding with the programme as planned, on September 20. This is the only way I can remember my late husband in the company of his fans. We have been busy with preparations despite a lack of funding. This annual event must serve its purpose.”
Responding to questions about Selmor’s parallel event, Daisy was dismissive, “I’ve heard about their event. I wouldn’t want to comment because people will criticise me again. When it comes to drama queens and kings, I am not there to control them… I wish Tuku was here he had a way of managing people.”
Meanwhile, Selmor has announced a separate celebration titled the “Tozeza Tuku Trail Run”, which will take place on September 21 at Lake Chivero.
The event is being managed by fitness trainer and former Tuku Half Marathon organiser Evonne Mudzingwa, who clarified his role,“This is Selmor’s event. I’m just here as a service provider. It’s a celebration of her father’s legacy, focusing on health, fitness, and culture.”
Tuku, who passed away on January 23, 2019, remains one of Zimbabwe’s most revered musical icons. Sadly, his legacy continues to be marred by family infighting, even in his absence.
