Popular Zimbabwean reggae-dancehall artist Winky D has come under social media fire after a user claimed he paid renowned football journalist Fabrizio Romano $10,000 for a 4-second promotional video.
In a viral tweet, the user mocked the expenditure, writing“The 10k USD Winky D paid Fabrizio Romano for a 4 seconds promo video could have been used to buy an ambulance or feed the poor, but no-one will say anything unless it’s Wicknell — that’s when people start being financial advisors.”
The jab appears to draw comparisons between Winky D and controversial businessman Wicknell Chivayo, whose spending habits and political connections frequently spark debate in Zimbabwean circles.
Though there’s no official confirmation from Winky D’s camp about the exact amount paid to Romano, the short clip from the Italian sports journalist who commands a massive global following was used to promote the artist’s new release. Supporters of Winky D argue the move was strategic branding and global outreach, while critics question its cost-effectiveness.
