Former Cabinet Minister Saviour Kasukuwere has applauded Zimbabwe’s tobacco farmers after a record-breaking 333.3 million kilograms of tobacco were sold at the auction floors this season.
In a tweet, Kasukuwere said the milestone “confirms the success and empowerment of the new farmer in Zimbabwe,” calling it a “huge achievement” for both farmers and industry stakeholders.
“This is a record crop… well done to the farmers and stakeholders. Hopefully this number will continue moving up,” he wrote.
Tobacco remains one of Zimbabwe’s top foreign currency earners, and this year’s output marks a significant increase compared to previous seasons, reflecting both expanded land use and favorable weather conditions.
Analysts say the figures signal the growing role of indigenous farmers in driving the country’s agricultural recovery, though challenges around pricing, sustainability, and fair earnings remain a topic of debate.
