Notes

On June 21, 2025, Gauteng police shot and killed Mauro Mucambe Junior, a notorious 40-year-old kidnapping kingpin from Mozambique, during a police operation in Fourways, Johannesburg. Mucambe was wanted for his alleged involvement in multiple high-profile kidnappings in Mozambique, with a warrant of arrest issued by Maputo Police in August 2024.

The operation began as part of an ongoing search for a kidnapped Pakistani businessman from Pretoria West, who remains in captivity with a ransom demand made to his family. The Anti-Kidnapping Task Team first tracked down suspects at a residential complex in Carlswald, Midrand, where they arrested two kidnappers and seized a Mercedes Benz and a silver Pajero believed to be used in kidnappings.

The police then proceeded to Fourways, where they announced their presence, leading to a shootout. During the confrontation, Mauro Mucambe Junior was fatally wounded. Authorities recovered an unlicensed firearm and 10 rounds of ammunition linked to him, along with four cellphones and four bank cards, which are expected to provide crucial leads in ongoing investigations.

Since January 2024, the Anti-Kidnapping Task Team has made significant progress, arresting over 170 individuals linked to kidnapping syndicates, rescuing more than 100 victims (mostly in Gauteng), and seizing over 40 vehicles used in these crimes.

Despite this breakthrough, the kidnapped Pakistani businessman is still missing, and police continue their efforts to secure his release. The South African Police Service expressed confidence in the task team’s work to bring the victim back safely.
