Former Finance Minister Tendai Biti has publicly condemned the recent arrests of students at the University of Zimbabwe, describing the crackdown as a “gross abuse of the constitution.”

The students were detained while participating in a peaceful demonstration in solidarity with their underpaid lecturers, highlighting ongoing frustrations over the government’s treatment of academia and workers.

In a Facebook post, Biti criticized the regime’s blatant disregard for constitutional principles and the rule of law.

“This regime has no care nor respect for constitutionalism and rule of law,” Biti declared. “The arrest of students peacefully protesting for fair wages is a clear indication of their authoritarian tendencies and disdain for democratic rights.”
