Lindiwe Sabeka, summoned to support allegations that Makonis fraudulently acquired Gono’s funds by altering company ownership, faced scrutiny over her qualifications and the sufficiency of her audit evidence.
She claimed to be a qualified auditor but did not produce certification when requested, and admitted that her firm’s audit report lacked primary evidence.
She stated the misappropriated funds were salaries paid to a couple, which she argued violated real estate laws.
During cross-examination, Sabeka was unable to confirm her involvement in the transactions or who authorized them, raising questions about the credibility of the evidence supporting the case.
The case involves Beverly and Clark Makoni, a couple who are accused of embezzling former Reserve Bank of Zimbabwe (RBZ) governor Gideon Gono ZWL$137 million.
