Prominent academic and former government minister, Professor Jonathan Moyo, has taken to social media to offer his perspective on the Zimbabwean music scene, praising the recent work of Jah Prayzah while also cautioning against simplistic comparisons between artists operating in different genres.
In a series of tweets, Professor Moyo highlighted the inherent differences between musicians, emphasizing that their excellence is fundamentally linked to their genres, audiences, and the response to their music.
He argued that judging artists from distinct genres and markets, such as the currently much-discussed Jah Prayzah and Winky D, to determine who is the “GOAT” (Greatest Of All Time) is a “dilettante” pursuit.
Professor Moyo unequivocally praised both Jah Prayzah and Winky D, describing them as “cool musicians” whose music is “exceptionally dope and topnotch.”
He stressed that these two are not the only Zimbabwean musicians deserving of recognition, pointing to the “impressive repertoire of national talent,” including internationally acclaimed groups like Mokoomba, whose potential he believes is boundless.
Professor Moyo specifically singled out Jah Prayzah for particular praise in the wake of the successful launch of his latest album, #NdiniMukudzeyi. He declared the new offering a “banger” that “rocks.”
According to Professor Moyo, when it comes to “musicality, lyrical depth of song composition, authenticity, and production quality,” Jah Prayzah stands in a “musical class of his own.”
