In a trial that saw Zimbabwean musician Chillmaster receive a wholly suspended two-year sentence and a US$200 fine for a fatal unlicensed driving accident, a remarkable story of forgiveness and support unfolded.

Chillmaster has committed to caring for the children and supporting the family of the late Custon Charumbira, the pedestrian killed in the accident.

During sentencing, the victim’s relative, Lucia Charumbira, shared with the court that the family had already extended forgiveness to the musician.

She praised Chillmaster’s support throughout the funeral and his ongoing compassion.

Lucia Charumbira further revealed that Chillmaster has promised to provide traditional appeasement, including livestock, to prevent avenging spirits from troubling the family, an act of restitution deeply valued in many Zimbabwean cultures after an unnatural death. Magistrate Tatenda Mukurunge confirmed this pledge.

Adding to these significant commitments, Chillmaster has also undertaken to fund the deceased’s children’s education until completion and provide them with monthly groceries, a gesture that touched both the family and the court. Magistrate Tatenda Mukurunge reiterated these promises in court.
