Residents in the Waterfalls suburb of Harare resorted to filling potholes with sand in response to deteriorating road conditions.

Their grassroots initiative drew attention and prompted a statement from Harare’s mayor, who took to social media to address the issue.

The mayor tweeted, “All cities have raised the issue of getting more money from @zinaraZW for road works. As long as citizens pay to ZINARA and not councils, road works and repairs are going to be a challenge. We built all these roads before @zinaraZW took over.”
