In a powerful statement that has resonated widely on social media, Zimbabwean former CCC opposition leader Nelson Chamisa took to Twitter to address the troubling trend of criminalizing journalism in the country.
His tweet, which highlighted the importance of press freedom, came in defense of fellow citizen journalist Blessed Mhlanga, who has faced legal repercussions for his reporting.
“This luminary, and illustrious citizen @bbmhlanga is just a journalist, not a criminal,” Chamisa wrote.
He underscored the crucial role that professional journalism plays in a democratic society, emphasizing that it should not be met with imprisonment or intimidation.
“In a New Great Zimbabwe, none will be in jail on account of executing their professional duty and journalistic work,” he stated.
