The Ghana Minerals Commission has declined Gold Fields Limited’s application to renew the Damang Mining Lease for another 30 years. This decision comes as the current 30-year lease, granted in April 1995, is set to expire on April 18, 2025.
This comes as Gold Fields’ failed to demonstrate material compliance with the requirements of the Minerals and Mining Act, 2006 (Act 703). Goldfields must wind down operations at the mine by the end of this week.
Specifically, the company declared no mineral reserves at the Damang mine in its 2024 annual report, and no exploration was proposed for 2024.
The mining operation at Damang commenced in August 1997, and the company has been a significant contributor to Ghana’s gold production. Gold Fields Limited owns the Tarkwa and Damang mines, with the Government of Ghana holding a 10% stake in both mines.
